Day 279

"Get into an elevator and find out if there really is anyone at the other end of the emergency intercom. If no one answers, the reason is probably Elisha Otis. In 1853, Elisha invented the revolutionary "safety elevator", fitted with a toothed guiderail on each side of the elevator shaft which caught any falling elevator car, locking it into place. This made elevators safe and allowed the development of skyscrapers."

Fortunately, the elevator in my building is almost directly next to my room. It turns out, however, that the emergency button only makes a loud buzzing sound and people generally ignore it. But then again, the chances of there actually being an emergency are fairly slim.
