"In this current economic climate, we must all cut costs. Today, fire somebody from your entourage."
According to the book, I can save up to $100 a year by losing an old friend. With that in mind, I decided to delete a few people off of my Facebook. I won't name names, but these were people with whom I either hadn't spoken to in a long time, or were never that close of friends to begin with. Maybe I'll see a little extra cashflow somewhere down the line.
"Choose one hair on your body that you will let grow one yard long. Most hair grows at approximately 1/2 an inch a month, so within 8 years your chosen hair should be reaching optimum length. Remember to keep it clean, using shampoo and conditioner daily, and avoiding any tangling
. Well, there we go. I doubt my wrist hair can actually grow a yard long, but we'll see what happens.
"Today, your goal is to try and expel some of the toxins that are building up and gradually poisoning your body. Only consume cleansing food and drink. By tonight, your internal organs will have begun to purge all the drugs, preservatives, additives and excess bile that you've been lugging around for years. This is the first step towards the new you!"
In a country built on wine and meat, I don't feel like I can avoid eating way too much food. The book suggests to eat and drink mostly just water, but that's going to get expensive seeing as how I can't drink the tap water here. But Italy has some of the freshest foods and they use as few preservatives as they can, so maybe that's a step in the right direction.
"The battleground of the 21st century will be water supply. Due to global warming and demographic trends, huge swathes of Africa and Asia will find their water demand drastically overrun their supply. Inevitably, this will result in migratory pressure towards the temperate regions. Do your bit to prevent this by safeguarding water."
So yeah, I took a very brief shower this morning and I've only used the bathroom minimally. However, being in Venice leads me to think that I don't have to worry so much about water supply.
Unfortunately, I've been so busy traveling around today that I haven't gotten the chance to learn this poem. But I have gotten to read and listen to it a few times, and I really like it. In middle school I was into Emily Dickens quite a bit for some reason, but I kind of fell out of the whole poetry thing. But I've started getting back into poetry a little. I saw a tattoo on Reddit that reminded me how much I love Robert Frost, so I think I may try to read some more poetry when I get the chance too.
